Our Story
This is the history of Beyond the Curve: how direct mentorship and reentry support began in 2013, what the program provided, and why that experience still guides the work today.
The Beginning
BTC started by mentoring young people while they were still incarcerated. The work did not stop at the prison walls. When they came home, we stayed connected. We helped them navigate the real-life challenges that often come after release — finding work, preparing for interviews, continuing education, accessing training, staying connected to basic communication tools, handling emergencies, and rebuilding daily life one step at a time.
For many, reentry was not one problem. It was many problems at once. A person could come home needing identification, transportation, housing support, job readiness, family stability, emotional support, and a plan for the next day. BTC became a steady place to turn.
Our History
BTC connected with young people while they were still inside, offering guidance, encouragement, and preparation for life beyond incarceration.
When participants came home, BTC continued the relationship. We checked in, listened, helped assess immediate needs, and worked with them through the early stages of reentry.
In the first few weeks after release, BTC checked in daily. As participants became more stable, those check-ins continued weekly and as needed, along with weekly one-on-one mentoring. The goal was not only to celebrate progress, but to notice when someone was struggling before things fell apart.
BTC maintained a 24-hour emergency contact relationship for BTC members. When urgent problems came up — whether it involved a crisis, a law-enforcement encounter, transportation, work issues, or another immediate need — BTC tried to be a reliable point of contact.
BTC helped with resumes, job searches, interviews, education, training, communication needs, and other everyday barriers that can make reentry overwhelming.
Our Purpose
Coming home should be the beginning of a new path, but for many people, reentry feels confusing, frustrating, and lonely. There is often no clear roadmap. People are expected to rebuild their lives while trying to figure out systems, deadlines, paperwork, responsibilities, and expectations all at once.
Beyond the Curve was created to help make that path easier to understand. We saw firsthand that support matters. A plan matters. A person to contact matters. Small steps matter.
Today
BTC's mission has evolved, but the heart of the work remains the same.
Today, Beyond the Curve is building on its original reentry experience by creating tools that can help people organize their next steps, access information, and move forward with more confidence. What once happened through direct one-on-one support can now be expanded through technology, including AI-powered guidance designed to help people prepare resumes, plan their week, identify needs, and navigate the reentry process.
The goal is not to replace human support. The goal is to make help easier to reach.
Our Commitment
Beyond the Curve believes people deserve a real chance to rebuild. We believe information should be easier to access. We believe reentry should not feel impossible. And we believe that with the right support and tools, people can move beyond the curve of their past and toward a better future.
